Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the blood and cells. The liver makes most of the cholesterol and some comes from food (mainly meat and dairy). Low density lipoprotein known as LDL is also called the “bad”unhealthy kind that can build up in the arteries to make plaque.
High density lipoprotein is the HDL which is also called the “good” cholesterol because is the healthy kind that transports excess cholesterol from the arteries to the liver which removes it from the body.
Triglycerides comes from the food we eat, and by lowering animal fat in our food, we can reduce the triglycerides in our bodies. Need to limit red meat and dairy consumption.
Cholesterol is needed by the body for many functions:
– Helps in the productions of sex hormones.
– Building block for tissues.
– assists in bile production in the liver.
– Converts to Vitamin D
– Helps support immune system.
– Necessary for absorption of fat and Vitamins A,D,E,K.
